Charles Hardin Holley was born on September 7, 1936 in Lubbock Texas to Lawrence and Ella Holley. They named their youngest child after his two grandfathers, Charles and Hardin, but Ella thought that his name was too big for such a little boy so she called him, “Buddy”.

Buddy developed an interest in music at an early age that ranged from country and gospel to blue grass and rhythm and blues. He created a rockabilly sound with a distinct flavor by integrating all of these genres into the songs he wrote and performed with The Crickets. Buddy Holly’s short-lived career encompassed twenty-five hit records before his tragic death at the age of twenty-two. Though his music career and life were brief, Buddy Holly created an innovative sound that influenced the direction of popular music.

The Buddy Holly Center

The Center is in the renovated historic Ft. Worth & Denver Depot which is owned by the City of Lubbock. The City purchased many of the artifacts on display.

The Main Gallery at the Buddy Holly Center focuses on the life of Buddy Holly, beginning with his childhood and progressing through his life as a son, brother, band mate, husband and iconic musical artist. There is a short movie about Buddy which include remembrance from other great musicians and Buddy’s influence on their music.

A nice gift shop is at the Center.

Unfortunately, photography was not permitted inside the Gallery. One noticeable absence is that the Center doesn’t play any of Buddy’s songs in the background. A music Center without music?

This Blog

All of the photos in this blog are from outside the Center.

The last photo is of the house Buddy’s drummer friend Jerry Allison lived. It is in this house that Buddy and Jerry created the Crickets band and wrote and played the music. The house was moved to the Buddy Holly Center site and renovated into the late 1950’s period. Guided tours are available 3 times a day.

Hutto: Texan Cafe

The Texan Cafe and Pie Shop, 207 East Street, Hutto, TX is my favorite comfort food restaurant!!

East of Austin on highway 79 is the small town of Hutto. The old town area is small, but the Cafe is a major hit with locals and travelers as well. The Cafe is open at 11:00 AM except for Mondays (closed); lunch and dinner only. The meals are made from scratch and they have a Tuesday through Friday Blue Plate Special. And you must have a piece of pie, cobbler, or cake. They have a Pie Happy Hour too (Tuesday-Saturday: 3 PM – 5 PM)

If you are hunger and near Hutto, I suggest eating at the Texan Cafe. Enjoy!!
